Memories of the Detroit Athletic Club

I have recently been thinking about some of my early adventures in Detroit during what must have been the 1930s. My uncle Bill Beyster was a member of the Detroit Athletic Club, which was a big deal at the time.

The club was established in 1887, and I believe most of Detroit’s automotive pioneers and top executives were members at one time or another. Occasionally my uncle would let us use his membership to have dinner. The club had one of Detroit’s most outstanding restaurants, and we would drive in from the suburbs and really enjoy ourselves.

When Betty and I were married, that was my uncle’s gift to us — he took us to dinner at the Athletic Club. I never worked out at the club, but I can remember having many good meals there.
